Handling an overpayment

• If the client was not overpaid or the amount is incorrect, appeal within 60 days of the date on the notice. SSA should not collect any money from current benefits until SSA makes a reconsideration decision.
• If the overpayment amount is correct, request a waiver if the client was not at fault in creating the overpayment and cannot afford to repay the money. SSA should stop collecting money from current benefits until SSA makes a waiver decision.
• You can request a payment plan if the person cannot afford the current amount that Social Security is collecting.
• Keep copies of all requests and proof of how the request was filed with SSA.
